So this is how it’s going to be

June 16, 2008

After a trip to the gym with a friend to lift weights, I stopped in to have a beer and see the progress on the deck she and her husband are building. After reviewing the home improvements in progress, we sat down with our beers out back.

One thing led to another and I was trying to recommend the movie GlenGarry Glen Ross to her. Here’s how a bit of the conversation went:

Me: It’s a dark movie but really good. And there’s a stellar cast . . . Jack Lemmon, Alec Baldwin, uh that good-looking actor who’s name has Glen in it — Scott Glen or maybe Glen Scott

Her: There is an actor named Scott Glenn.

Me: No, not him. This guy is really handsome but he’s losing his hair now. He was in the Houston, we’ve got a problem movie.

Her: Tom Hanks?

Me: No, no — not Tom Hanks.

Her: And it isn’t Gary Sinise?

Me: No, he’s better looking than Gary Sinise.

Her: I know who you’re talking about. His character was the one who had like five kids and — who’s married to Kyra Sedgwick?

Me: Kevin Bacon. No, it’s not Kevin Bacon. This guy starred in that movie I never saw about that modern artist — oh shit, I can’t think of his name — the guy who splattered paint on the canvas –

Her: — Jackson Pollock.

Me: Yeah, he played Jackson Pollock in that movie. Anyway, he’s one of the actors in GlenGarry Glen Ross.

Us: [Laughing our asses off at the realization we knew exactly who we were talking about but still had not come up with a name.]

Me: So this is how it’s going to be . . . you hit a certain age and it all goes to shit.

And by the way, the name of the actor I couldn’t remember is Ed Harris. Where I came up with Glen is a mystery to me. I like Ed Harris but never recall his name when I want to. GlenGarry Glen Ross is a really good movie. And I’d like to rent that Jackson Pollock movie, if I can remember to write down.

Noooo, I don’t think the weights had anything to do with it. Beer, maybe, not the weights . . .

Got something to say?
